?What is the Zodiac Sign Calculator?
A zodiac sign calculator determines your Western (sun-sign) and Chinese (lunar-year) zodiac signs from your date of birth. Western astrology divides the year into 12 sun signs by fixed date ranges — Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces — while Chinese astrology cycles through 12 animals based on the lunar birth year (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig). This is a popular cultural tool used for entertainment, cultural curiosity, and lighthearted personality profiling, without scientific foundation but with deep cultural significance across many societies.
The Formula
Western sun-sign boundaries are fixed by astrological tradition — for example, Aries spans March 21 through April 19 regardless of year. The Chinese zodiac uses 4 AD as its 'Year of the Rat' anchor; subtracting 4 from any year and taking the remainder modulo 12 gives the animal index (0 = Rat, 1 = Ox, 2 = Tiger, …, 11 = Pig). This calculator uses the Gregorian calendar year for Chinese zodiac, which works for most cases; strictly, the Chinese zodiac flips on Chinese New Year (late January or early February), so people born in January or early February may see a slightly different result under strict lunar rules.
Practical Examples
Born March 25: Western sun sign is Aries (Fire element), known for boldness and leadership.
Born August 10: Western sun sign is Leo (Fire element), associated with confidence and warmth.
Born in 1990: Chinese zodiac is Year of the Horse, the 7th animal in the cycle.
Born in 2000: Chinese zodiac is Year of the Dragon, the 5th and most auspicious animal in traditional belief.
Someone born in 1988 is a Dragon; someone born in 2000 is also a Dragon (12-year cycle means the Dragon repeats).
A person born on January 25, 2001 is Gregorian-year Snake, but under strict lunar rules would be the previous year's Dragon — showing why the January/February birth edge cases matter.
