What is karat and why does it matter?

Karat (K) measures gold purity out of 24. 24K is 99.9% pure gold — soft, bright yellow, best for investment bars. 22K is 91.67% pure — common for South Asian jewellery. 21K is 87.5% — standard in the Middle East. 18K is 75% — the typical Western fine-jewellery standard. Higher karat costs more per unit weight because more of the weight is actually gold rather than alloy metals.

How does the 24K rate relate to the 22K rate?

The 22K rate per tola equals the 24K rate × (22 ÷ 24) = 91.67% of the 24K rate. So if the 24K rate is PKR 250,000 per tola, the 22K rate is PKR 229,167 per tola. Jewellers usually display both on their daily rate boards. This calculator does the conversion automatically once you select a karat.

Is my gold jewellery really the karat that was stamped?

Often yes, but not always. Reputable hallmarking (BIS in India, SLCN certifications, international assay offices) guarantees the karat. Uncertified pieces from informal markets can be lower-karat than stamped. For high-value transactions, have the piece tested by a registered assayer with an XRF spectrometer — it's the only non-destructive way to verify purity accurately.

Does this calculator account for making charges?

No — this is the raw metal value only. Jewellery sold at retail typically adds 5–25% making charges (labour, design, branding, store margin), plus sales tax in many jurisdictions. Use this calculator for the pure metal value and ask the jeweller separately for their making-charge schedule. When selling jewellery back, you usually only receive the metal value minus a small margin.

What is a tola and how is it related to grams?

A tola is the traditional weight unit used across Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal for precious metals. 1 tola = 11.6638 grams (12 mashas, or 96 rattis). This is the 'standard tola' used by most Pakistani jewellers. Occasionally an older '12-gram tola' is used in some older shops — always confirm with your jeweller if the stated weight is unusual.

Can I use this calculator to compare jewellery prices across countries?

It supports the full set of units used in Pakistan and South Asia — tola, masha, ratti, grams, and troy ounces — and automatically applies the correct purity fraction for any karat from 10K through 24K. This makes it equally useful for a family checking the value of wedding jewellery, an investor pricing gold bullion, or a jeweller quoting custom orders.

The Formula

Value = Weight (g) × 24K rate/g × (Karat ÷ 24). Weight = Money ÷ (24K rate/g × Karat ÷ 24).

Gold market rates are quoted for pure 24-karat gold. At any lower karat, the metal is mixed with alloys (copper, silver, zinc) for hardness, so the effective rate per gram scales by the karat fraction — 22K is 22/24 = 91.67% of the 24K rate, 18K is 18/24 = 75%, and so on. The calculator first normalizes your entered rate to a per-gram pure-gold rate (dividing by 1 if per-gram, by 11.6638 if per-tola, or by 31.1035 if per-ounce), then multiplies or divides to get the result. TMR inputs (tola/masha/ratti) are converted to grams using the standard subcontinental ratios: 1 tola = 12 masha = 96 ratti = 11.6638 g.
