?What is the Working Days Calculator?

A working days calculator counts the number of Monday–Friday weekdays between two dates, excluding Saturdays and Sundays. It is essential for HR departments counting leave balances, project managers estimating business-day deadlines, finance teams calculating settlement dates (T+1, T+3, T+5 conventions), freelancers billing by the business day, and legal professionals respecting court filing deadlines that run on working days only. The calculator handles ranges of any length, including periods that start or end mid-week, and correctly identifies every weekend day to subtract from the total.

The Formula

Working Days = Total Days − Weekend Days (number of Saturdays + number of Sundays in the range).

The calculator iterates day by day through the date range, counting each occurrence of Saturday (day 6 in JavaScript's Date.getDay()) and Sunday (day 0). Working days are what remains after subtracting weekends from the total range length. This day-by-day approach correctly handles any range, including edge cases like a three-day range that starts on Friday (two weekend days, one working day) or a range that spans exactly one week (five working days, two weekend days).

Practical Examples

1

January 1 to January 31 in 2024 contains 31 total days, 23 working days, and 8 weekend days — a typical full month.

2

A 100-calendar-day project window typically contains about 71 working days, because roughly 29 days fall on weekends.

3

Two weeks of vacation (14 calendar days) equals 10 working days to deduct from the employee's leave balance.

4

Financial settlement 'T+3 working days' means three business days after the trade, skipping any intervening weekends.

5

A court filing deadline of '30 working days from notice' in a notice issued on April 1 lands around May 13 (after removing ~9 weekend days).

6

Freelance consultant billing: a 6-month engagement equals roughly 130 working days, the correct basis for daily-rate invoicing.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — only weekends are excluded. Public holidays vary by country, region, and even company policy, so they cannot be automatically deducted without user-specific configuration. After calculating the working days, subtract any applicable public holidays manually. Pakistan has roughly 10–14 public holidays per year; the US has 10 federal holidays; UK has 8 bank holidays.
