Flooring Calculator

Calculate boxes of flooring needed and estimated cost.

Floor AreaNaN sq ft

Boxes Needed

NaN

Step-by-step calculation

Formula

Boxes = ⌈(Area × (1 + waste%)) ÷ Coverage-per-box⌉

  1. 1Area = NaN × NaN = NaN sq ft
  2. 2Area + 10% waste = NaN × 1.10 = NaN sq ft
  3. 3Boxes = ⌈NaN ÷ 25⌉ = NaN

?What is the Flooring Calculator?

A flooring calculator determines how many boxes of flooring material (wood, laminate, vinyl, or tile planks) you need for a room, plus the estimated total material cost based on your chosen price per box. It accounts for a waste margin — typically 10% for straight installations, 15% for diagonal, and 20% for complex patterns — and rounds up to whole boxes because you cannot buy fractions. This is essential for homeowners planning a renovation, contractors preparing accurate quotes, and anyone who has ever run out of flooring mid-install and had to wait weeks for a second delivery.

The Formula

Boxes = Ceil[Area × (1 + Waste%) ÷ Coverage per Box]. Total Cost = Boxes × Price per Box.

First, multiply the floor area by one plus the waste percentage to get the total material needed. Then divide by each box's coverage (typically 20–30 sq ft per box for planks, varies by product) and round up to the next whole box since you cannot purchase partial boxes. Total material cost is simply boxes times price per box. Always keep one extra unopened box in reserve after installation — dye lots change over time and future repairs may need matching material that is no longer available.

Practical Examples

1

A 20 × 15 ft room (300 sq ft) with 25 sq ft per box and 10% waste needs 14 boxes, covering 350 sq ft total.

2

At PKR 5,000 per box, that's PKR 70,000 for flooring material alone — before installation labor.

3

Installation labor in Pakistan typically runs PKR 60–100 per sq ft; for the 300 sq ft example, add PKR 18,000–30,000.

4

Underlayment (the padding under floating floors) is usually sold separately by the square foot — budget another PKR 30–80 per sq ft.

5

Transitions (T-molding, reducers, quarter round) for doorways and edges add PKR 500–1,500 each — do not forget them.

6

For a 1,000 sq ft home flooring project at mid-range quality, expect total material plus installation cost in the range of PKR 2.5–4 lakhs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use 10% for a straight layout in a simple rectangular room. Use 15% for diagonal installation or rooms with multiple obstacles (columns, kitchen islands, odd corners). Use 20% for herringbone, chevron, or other complex patterns that produce lots of small offcuts. Cheap materials can afford higher waste; expensive natural-wood tiles justify more careful planning to minimize it.
